Biography

“I hope to improve patient quality of life, whether digestive or related to the abdominal wall.”

Dr. Colavita is board certified in general surgery and specializes in hernias and non-cancerous diseases of the esophagus and stomach. He serves as an assistant professor of surgery at Atrium Health General & Abdominal Surgery, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center.

He is dedicated to caring for patients with esophageal diseases and hernias through both treatment and surgical research. He was one of the first physicians to perform peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) in North Carolina. He has received numerous awards from the Americas Hernia Society, the European Hernia Society, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), including a SAGES traveling fellowship award. Dr. Colavita was selected to participate in the Harvard Medical School Surgical Leadership Program.

He received his medical degree at the University of North Carolina and completed his residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship at the Providence Portland Medical Center.

In his spare time, Dr. Colavita spends time with his wife and child. He enjoys getting outside, golfing and listening to music.
