Stephen J. O'Brien, MD

I’m board certified in general pediatrics. I have a particular interest in nutrition, fitness, weight management and sports medicine.

I serve as the medical director for Atrium Health Levine Children’s Cabarrus Pediatrics and am the past chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

I have been recognized multiple times as a Best Doctor by America's Best Doctors, Charlotte magazine and the North Carolina Business Journal.

God has blessed my life in so many ways, and the Bible says, ‘Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.’ I hope I am using my gifts to make a difference in the lives of the children I care for.

I speak basic Spanish and volunteer as a doctor and medical advisor to La Aljaba Children's Home, an orphanage in Colombia, South America. I serve on the board of DreamOn3, an organization that grants sports-related wishes to children with chronic medical and development issues.

As a pediatrician, I feel I get to coach, teach and encourage children every day. I enjoy investing my time and energy at work into things that matter, and the well-being of kids is of great value to me.

I received my medical degree at the University of Kentucky and completed residency at Vanderbilt University, where I was chief resident. I am a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP).

I love spending time outside of work with my wife, Kathy, and our four children. I play basketball most mornings before work and also enjoy running, hiking and mountain biking. I am a life-long sports fan of my alma mater, Duke University. I didn't achieve my dream of playing basketball for Duke, but I had a great time serving as the Blue Devil mascot during college.
