Biography
“God has blessed my life in so many ways, and the Bible says, ‘Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.’ I hope I am using my gifts to make a difference in the lives of the children I care for.”
Dr. O'Brien is board certified in general pediatrics. He has a particular interest in nutrition, fitness, weight management and sports medicine.
He serves as the medical director for Atrium Health Levine Children’s Cabarrus Pediatrics and is the past chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. O'Brien has been recognized multiple times as a Best Doctor by America's Best Doctors, Charlotte magazine and the North Carolina Business Journal.
He speaks basic Spanish and volunteers as a doctor and medical advisor to La Aljaba Children's Home, an orphanage in Colombia, South America. He serves on the board of DreamOn3, an organization that grants sports-related wishes to children with chronic medical and development issues.
As a pediatrician, Dr. O’Brien feels he gets to coach, teach and encourage children every day. He enjoys investing his time and energy at work into things that matter, and the well-being of kids is of great value to him.
Dr. O'Brien received his medical degree at the University of Kentucky and completed residency at Vanderbilt University, where he was chief resident. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP).
Dr. O’Brien loves spending time outside of work with his wife, Kathy, and their 4 children. He plays basketball most mornings before work and also enjoys running, hiking and mountain biking. Dr. O'Brien is a life-long sports fan of his alma mater, Duke University. He didn't achieve his dream of playing basketball for Duke but had a great time serving as the Blue Devil mascot during college.
