Biography
Dr. Hong is board certified in otolaryngology (the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the ear, nose and throat) and in head and neck surgical oncology and reconstructive surgery. He has a special interest in benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck and the complex reconstruction that comes with their treatment.
He served as the chief of Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and an associate professor of surgery at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. Hong was awarded The Society of Federal Health Professionals (AMSUS) Physician Award for the federal military health system and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s LTG Lee Chennault Outstanding Faculty Award.
He is a prolific researcher who led a team of engineers and doctors to create the COVID-19 Airway Management Isolation Chamber (CAMIC) barrier device, which obtained an FDA emergency use authorization early in the pandemic.
In addition, Dr. Hong is spearheading efforts at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) as the principal investigator to enable safe and effective robotic telesurgery in challenging operational environments. He serves as a co-investigator in multiple funded medical and technology research projects and has contributed research to numerous publications.
Dr. Hong received his medical degree at The University of Toledo and completed residency in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center. Following residency, he served as a staff otolaryngologist at Ft. Campbell in Kentucky where he earned his air assault badge in the 101st Airborne Division. He completed a fellowship in head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgery at Stanford University.
Previously, Dr. Hong was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, to serve as the brigade head and neck surgeon for the United States Central Command.
