Biography
“I want to make sure patients understand their conditions. While I guide them through the treatment process with the most up-to-date and evidence-based approaches, my goal is to help them recover and get back to a sense of normalcy as quickly as possible.”
Dr. William “Buck” Lyman is board certified in surgery and in colon and rectal surgery. He specializes in malignant and benign diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. Common issues treated include colon cancer, rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's, ulcerative colitis and diverticulitis. Additionally, he treats benign and malignant anorectal diseases, including hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures, cancers and strictures.
Dr. Lyman is an assistant professor in the Department of General Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. His research interests include minimally invasive surgery, robotics, resident training and education, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and up-to-date treatments in colorectal surgery.
During his training, he was fortunate to have good mentors who showed him the positive impact of delivering high-quality, subspecialized colorectal care for patients.
He received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology at The University of Tennessee, where he also received his medical degree. Dr. Lyman completed residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation.
He spends the majority of his free time with his wife, 2 children and dog. They enjoy being involved in their local community and exploring the many beautiful areas surrounding Charlotte. They love the outdoors, whether in the woods, on the water or in the backyard around the grill.
