Biography
“Epilepsy is a major neurological disorder with a significant impact on a patient's life and work. My goal is to provide patients the best epilepsy care and help them achieve the best quality of life.”
Dr. Fan is board certified in neurology and epilepsy. He specializes in optimizing care for patients with primary or secondary seizures, refractory epilepsy, invasive intracranial recording for localizing epileptogenic foci, continuous video-electroencephalography (cvEEG) monitoring and quantitative analysis in a critical care setting.
He is an adjunct associate professor of neurology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was an assistant professor of neurology at Washington University in St. Louis before joining Atrium Health. He is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.
Dr. Fan is fascinated by the complexity of the nervous system and how neurological disorders affect the mind and body. He conducted neuroscience research with world-class neuroscientists during his PhD study and post-doctoral fellowship and received clinical training at top institutions for neurology and epilepsy education.
He received his medical degree at Guangzhou Medical University and a PhD in neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a residency at The University of Chicago and a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Fan’s clinical research interests include exploring novel methods for early seizure prediction and detection, as well as studying mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis and drug-resistance.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 children. He is involved in his church and volunteering in the community and enjoys cooking, yardwork, reading, hiking and jogging.
