CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 9, 2019 – Atrium Health is proud to announce that it received the 2019 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. Atrium Health will be recognized for its commitment and dedication to leadership in energy efficiency by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on April 11, 2019.

“It is an honor to be recognized for Atrium Health’s work in becoming more energy efficient, two years in a row,” said Michael Roberts, director of energy services at Atrium Health. “We know energy demands have steadily increased with new medical technologies and capabilities, such as virtual care. But Atrium Health decided years ago in an effort to help promote responsible energy use, it would work towards an ambitious goal and reduce our energy footprint.”

Atrium Health is only the third healthcare system to receive this distinct recognition for two consecutive years. To date, Atrium Health has reduced its energy footprint by more than twenty percent, essentially equal to taking three of our hospitals off the grid and powering them for free.

Atrium Health has demonstrated superior leadership, innovation and commitment to environmental protection through energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR by making both large and small changes, including:

  • Installing efficiency LED lighting.
  • Modifying HVAC controls to reduce energy when areas are not occupied and replacing outdated controls with current technology.
  • Providing teammates education and information to ensure they make informed decisions regarding energy efficiency.

“I applaud the 2019 ENERGY STAR Award Winners,” said EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation Bill Wehrum. “Their innovation and leadership enhance America’s economic competitiveness. Reducing costly energy waste improves air quality and public health while protecting the environment.”
