Physicians and APPs could earn $30-50K toward student loans

Nine Atrium Health locations have earned the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Site Shortage Designation, allowing physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) who work at these locations to qualify for a federal loan repayment program.

The program’s goal is to help recruit medical professionals to work in geographic areas, among populations or at facilities where there is a shortage of primary care, dental or mental health care providers.

This loan repayment program carries a two-year commitment and offers the opportunity to earn $30,000 to $50,000 toward student loans.

The Atrium Health locations that are now approved are:

  • Atrium Health Carolinas Primary Care, a facility of Atrium Health Anson

Atrium Health has a long history of providing health care for residents in our underserved communities by offering affordable access to primary care, behavioral health and medical specialties,” said Dr. Scott Rissmiller, executive vice president and chief physician executive for Atrium Health. The NHSC site designation will further distinguish Atrium Health as a best place to care and help us fulfill our mission to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing – for all.

NHSC-approved sites provide outpatient, primary health care services to people in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).HPSAs can be geographic areas, populations or facilities. These areas have a shortage of primary, dental or mental health care providers.

Across the country, more than 22,700 NHSC participants provide comprehensive primary medical, dental and behavioral and mental health care at more than 19,600 NHSC-approved sites, serving over 23.6 million people who live in rural, urban and tribal communities. Providers who are truly committed to working with the underserved often make a financial sacrifice. This loan repayment program can help with that financial reality.

Applications for the National Health Services Corps Site Shortage Designation program follow a rigorous process. Atrium Health’s successful application to the program was a collaboration of Atrium Health Medical Group and finance team leaders, and part of ongoing efforts to build the infrastructure, technology and other systems that will make Atrium Health the national leader in health, learning and community.

There are several financial incentive programs available for physicians and APPs who are interested in working in with underserved populations, including a retention bonus program from the state of North Carolina that carries a cash stipend of up to $100,000.
