Annual list helps parents make informed decisions on where to find nation’s best maternal care

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 5, 2023 – Fifteen Advocate Health hospitals are being recognized by U.S. News & World Report in its annual recognition for “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.”  The hospitals are classified as “high performing” and considered the best maternity hospitals in the nation.

High performing hospitals in Illinois include: Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital; Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center; Advocate Lutheran General Hospital; and Advocate Sherman Hospital.

High performing hospitals in Wisconsin include: Aurora BayCare Medical Center; Aurora Lakeland Medical Center; Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area; Aurora Medical Center – Grafton; Aurora Medical Center – Oshkosh; Aurora Medical Center – Sheboygan County; Aurora Medical Center Summit; and Aurora Medical Center West Allis.

“These types of recognitions are extremely meaningful to our patients and our teammates,” said Dr. Ann Windsor, vice president of the women’s health service line at Advocate Health Care and Aurora Health Care. “It reaffirms their respective choices of where to give and receive care, given the clinical excellence we’re delivering each day.”

In North Carolina, high performing hospitals include: Atrium Health Cabarrus; Atrium Health Pineville; and Atrium Health University City.

“This is a testament to the work our teams do every day to provide the best possible experience for our patients,” said Dr. Suzanna Fox, senior vice president and Atrium Health women’s care service line leader. “This recognition will help expecting families make informed choices – to reassure them the highest-quality care for their maternity needs can be found at our hospitals.”

To be recognized as high performing by U.S. News, hospitals must excel in multiple quality metrics, including C-section rates, newborn complication rates, breast milk feeding rates and early elective delivery rates. Hospitals must have C-section rates that are 26% lower, and newborn complication rates that are 37% lower than unrecognized hospitals to earn the designation.

Three Advocate Health hospitals were also designated “Maternity Care Access Hospitals,” recognizing hospitals that provide quality care to expectant parents in areas that would otherwise be maternity care deserts. These hospitals include Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center, in Rome, Georgia, Atrium Health Union, in Monroe, North Carolina, and Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Earlier this year, 32 Advocate Health hospitals earned recognition on U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 “Best Hospitals” list – 30 adult hospitals plus Advocate Children’s Hospital, in Chicago, and Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, in Charlotte.
