Six hospitals recognized for commitment to providing safe, high-quality labor and delivery care
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 10, 2024 – Six Atrium Health hospitals from across North Carolina have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report in its annual list of “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.” The list classifies these hospitals as “high performing,” the highest level of achievement possible this year.
These noteworthy hospitals are among the 24 Advocate Health hospitals named to the list. Atrium Health is part of Charlotte-based Advocate Health.
Atrium Health’s high performing maternity hospitals in North Carolina include:
- Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord
- Atrium Health Pineville in Charlotte
- Atrium Health Stanly in Albemarle
- Atrium Health Union in Monroe
- Atrium Health Union West in Matthews
- Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem
"This recognition underscores our unwavering dedication to providing exceptional maternity care," said Dr. Scott Rissmiller, executive vice president and chief physician executive for Advocate Health. "Our commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centered care ensures that families receive the highest quality of care during one of the most important times in their lives."
The U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as cesarean section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, severe unexpected newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, birthing-friendly practices and reporting on racial/ethnic disparities, among other measures.
“We are delighted to have six hospitals on U.S. News & World Report’s list of ‘Best Maternity Hospitals’ and to be included among the best-of-the-best for maternity care,” said Meghan Clithero, vice president of the women's service line at Atrium Health. “Our outstanding women’s care teams are dedicated to patient safety, innovative practices and health equity. We will continue to strive to provide unparalleled care to all our patients, ensuring that every family has access to the highest quality maternity services in their communities.”
Six Advocate Health hospitals, nationwide, were also designated “Maternity Care Access Hospitals,” recognizing hospitals that provide quality care to expectant parents in areas that would otherwise be maternity care deserts. In North Carolina, those hospitals were Atrium Health Cleveland, Atrium Health Stanly, Atrium Health Union and Atrium Health Union West.
Atrium Health women’s care offers exceptional maternity services at every stage of delivery, including customized support, as well as top fertility and high-risk pregnancy specialists. In addition to U.S. News’ ratings, its maternity centers consistently meet high national standards for safety and expertise.
Earlier this year, Advocate Health was recognized by U.S. News & World Report with eight “Top 50” rankings and 32 “High Performing” specialties at its hospitals. Additionally, for the 17th consecutive year, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, in Charlotte, was recently recognized as one of U.S. News’ “Best Children’s Hospitals.” In addition to ranking among the Top 50 in the country across 10 pediatric specialties, the hospital also earned the prestigious ranking of the No.1 children’s hospital in North Carolina and tied for the No.1 children’s hospital in the southeastern United States.
Atrium Health Pineville was one of 26 hospitals identified nationwide by U.S. News earlier this year during Black Maternal Health Week for achieving excellent outcomes for cesarean section and unexpected newborn complications among Black patients.
