President’s Letter

Doctor Ruben Mesa

To our patients, teammates, colleagues and friends,

Welcome to the new Atrium Health Levine Cancer!

Our cancer teams at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist have worked toward this moment for several years now. And as of June 19, 2023, our next chapter begins as we come together to form the largest cancer program in the Carolinas.

Atrium Health Levine Cancer, fueled by the research of our National Cancer Institute-designated Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and supported by Wake Forest University School of Medicine, represents our vision for a cancer program without walls. This unique model will unite exceptional patient care and support with leading scientific research, education and innovation to bring world-class cancer services to every corner of our communities.

Importantly, our name also recognizes Sandra and Leon Levine’s enduring commitment to the fight against cancer. We are deeply grateful for the Levine family’s leadership and support through The Leon Levine Foundation, as they’ve generously given their time and resources to patients in the Carolinas and beyond.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, with more opportunities than we can count. But I can tell you that I’m tremendously proud of – and inspired by – the two programs that now comprise Atrium Health Levine Cancer.

Each brings a robust bench of leaders, innovators, researchers, educators and health care providers who are among the best and brightest in the field. Beyond their impressive credentials, these teams are fiercely passionate about making a difference. And as we combine the complementary strengths of both programs, we’re rallying around the belief that we can make an even greater impact as one.

Together, we believe we can save more lives and prevent more disease than we could apart. By closely connecting care and innovation, we can learn faster. We can make the most advanced care more accessible and health outcomes more equitable for patients across diverse communities. We can continue to meet the highest possible standard: being the program we’d all trust to treat a loved one if they had cancer.

And as part of Advocate Health, the fifth largest nonprofit health system in the country, we also have a unique ability to make scientific discoveries, pilot our findings on a small scale, and then implement them on a large scale to help even more people.

I look forward to leading and witnessing the Atrium Health Levine Cancer team, whose energy, ingenuity, ideas and expertise will touch millions of lives.

Defeating cancer is a team sport. From our care teams, researchers, educators and teammates to our donors, patients and family members, every individual plays a critical role. To all who are a part of our incredible team: Thank you. In our fight against cancer, we’re stronger together.
