Visitor Restrictions Update: Due to COVID-19, visitor restrictions are in place. Learn more.

Volunteer Restrictions: To protect our patients and staff from current viruses, volunteers are restricted from all facilities, and we won’t be processing new applications at this time. Thank you for your interest in helping our patients. We couldn’t do what we do without you and hope you’ll pursue volunteer opportunities when they become available again.

Volunteers are valued members of the Carolinas Medical Center patient care team. We offer opportunities in a wide variety of areas including patient services and non-patient care. Whether you are a retiree, a career professional, a high school student or homemaker, Carolinas Medical Center can meet your needs and interests. We also offer a Teen Program for high school students ages 15-18.

Adult Volunteer Information

Carolinas Medical Center has created a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for adults interested in volunteering their time. We require all our adult volunteers to be 18 years of age and older. We also ask them to commit to a one year time frame of working the same shift, preferably every week. Our shifts range from two to four hours depending on the position, the department's needs and your schedule. We have a wide variety of positions and make every effort to match your availability and interests with the needs of the hospital. To view current volunteer opportunities, please visit volunteer opportunities

The CMC volunteer application requires two non-family member references. If your application is selected, you must complete and interview with the Volunteer Coordinator, a background check, a health history form (including proof of immunizations), two TB skin tests, and a Volunteer Orientation.

Acceptance of volunteers is contingent upon meeting the above requirements and the needs of the hospital. Completing an application does not guarantee acceptance into the volunteer program. The application process may take 4-6 weeks.

Teen Volunteer Information

Due to COVID-19, our Summer Teen Volunteer Program is currently suspended. We will provide any updates as soon as they become available.

Carolinas Medical Center is offering a comprehensive Summer Teen Volunteer Program for high school students ages 15-18. The program’s focus is to provide students with education and experience in a hospital setting through volunteer service and informative learning sessions. Volunteers provide non-clinical support, but there are a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the hospital from delivering sterile equipment to various units, providing directions and/or escorting patients and visitors, assisting with clerical work, playing the lobby piano, and more.

Educational learning sessions give students the opportunity to connect with health care professionals and explore a broad variety of hospital specialties.

Steps to becoming a teen volunteer:

  • Applications are accepted Jan. 1-March 1. No late applications will be accepted. Each application includes two teacher references and an essay. We also require a background check of all applicants.
  • Acceptable applicants will be notified and scheduled for interviews March 1 through April 1.
  • If selected, you will attend a three-hour orientation before volunteering in the hospital.
  • Volunteers will need health clearance from Teammate Health and will be required to present a copy of their vaccinations, a health history form, and documentation of the first of two TB skin tests before clearance will be given.
