Learn about our seasonal visitor policy & patient guidelines

Volunteers are valued members of the Carolinas Medical Center patient care team. We offer opportunities in a wide variety of areas including patient services and non-patient care. We hope that through our volunteer program, you will discover that your skills, enthusiasm and experience make a difference in our ability to deliver quality healthcare. In return for your valuable service, we are pleased to offer you a chance to do meaningful and important work, make new friends, see new faces, participate in special programs and projects, and receive recognition for your efforts. We also offer a summer Teen Program for high school students ages 15 - 18.

Adult Volunteer Information

The Carolinas Medical Center volunteer application requires two non-family member references. If your application is selected, you must complete an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator, a background check, a health clearance, two TB skin tests, and a Volunteer Orientation.

Acceptance of volunteers is contingent upon meeting the above requirements and the needs of the hospital. Completing an application does not guarantee acceptance into the volunteer program. The application process may take 4 - 6 weeks.

If you are interested in applying for a role as a volunteer, please complete the online application.

Teen Volunteer Information

Carolinas Medical Center is offering a comprehensive Summer Teen Volunteer Program for high school students ages 15-18. The program’s focus is to provide students with education and experience in a hospital setting through volunteer service and informative learning sessions. Volunteers provide non-clinical support, but there are a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the hospital from delivering sterile equipment to various units, providing directions and/or escorting patients and visitors, assisting with clerical work, playing the lobby piano, and more.

Educational learning sessions give students the opportunity to connect with health care professionals and explore a broad variety of hospital specialties.

The 2026 Summer Volunteer session will begin the week of June 15th and end the week of August 10th. Volunteers will be required to commit to one shift a week for 2 hours: these shifts are Monday through Friday, morning or afternoon.

Steps to becoming a teen volunteer:

  • The teen volunteer application can be accessed at the following link: https://bttr.im/tcy39. Applications will only be accepted until March 15th.
  • Please note: due to the high volume of applications we receive, not all applicants will be admitted to the program. Selected applicants will be notified and scheduled for interviews in April.
  • If selected, you’ll attend a three-hour orientation.
  • Before volunteering, you’ll need clearance from Teammate Health. This includes:
    • Proof of vaccinations
    • A health history form
    • A blood draw
