When you’re not feeling well, it can be hard to know where to go. Should you head to the emergency department, try urgent care or wait to see your primary care provider? We’re here to help you make that decision.
With an emergency care video visit, you speak directly with an experienced emergency medicine clinician who can:
- Evaluate your symptoms in real time.
- Guide you to the right level of care — whether that’s the emergency room, urgent care or follow-up with your primary care provider.
- Treat you right away if your condition is appropriate for virtual care.
And it all takes place from the comfort of your home, using your smartphone, tablet or computer.
Many health concerns can be safely handled remotely, but in-person emergency care is the right choice for sudden or serious illness and injury. You should not use emergency care video visits for:
- Chest pain with shortness of breath (at rest or when making physical effort).
- New confusion, slurred speech or stroke-like symptoms.
- Severe difficulty breathing.
- Major trauma or inability to walk.
- Suicidal thoughts or psychiatric emergencies.
- Prescription refill requests for narcotics or controlled substances.

An emergency care video visit lets you connect with an emergency medicine clinician 24/7 to see if you need to come to the ER or not. You’ll speak with a clinician through a secure video call using your smartphone, tablet or computer. It’s fast, effective and designed to help you get the right care at the right time — whether that’s treatment during the call or a recommendation to go to the ER.

- Must be physically located in North Carolina at the time of the visit
- Available to both new and existing patients
Emergency care video visits are ideal when you’re unsure if your condition requires ER care. Clinicians can evaluate a variety of concerns, including abdominal pain, worsening symptoms, infections and more. We can also help you decide if you need labs, CT scans or X-rays immediately.
You’ll describe your symptoms and medical history. The clinician will assess your condition and recommend the best next step:
- Treat you virtually
- Refer you to urgent care or your primary care provider
- Advise you to go to the emergency department
- If appropriate, prescriptions or treatment plans will be provided
Emergency care video visits are staffed by emergency medicine clinicians who are trained to assess whether your symptoms require ER-level care. These visits are ideal when you’re unsure how serious your condition is or when you need expert triage.
Yes. All emergency care video visits are conducted using secure, encrypted platforms that comply with HIPAA regulations. Your personal health information is protected.
- No upfront payment is collected at the time of the visit.
- If you’re treated during the video visit, we’ll bill your insurance (if applicable).
- Self-pay patients will receive a bill, and discounts may apply—especially if you are advised to seek in-person care.
- If you end up receiving care at an Atrium Health ER after your virtual visit, your visit is free of charge.
No. If you’re directed to one of our Atrium Health emergency departments, the care team will already have your visit summary. This helps avoid repeating information and may streamline your care once you arrive. However, this does not necessarily mean your emergency department wait time will be shorter.
Yes. If appropriate, the clinician can send prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy. However, we do not prescribe narcotics, controlled substances or psychiatric medications through this service.
