Biography

“I do my job because I enjoy working with and helping families. They often come to us in times of great stress, and it is very gratifying to be able to help them sort through what is happening and why.”

Dr. Demmer is board certified in pediatrics and medical genetics. She specializes in clinical genetics and inherited conditions, genetic testing, cancer genetics, cardiovascular genetics, chromosomal disorders, dysmorphology, developmental delay, autism, skeletal dysplasias (abnormalities of cartilage and bone growth) and neurogenetic disorders.

She is the medical director of genetics and associate pediatric residency director in the Department of Pediatrics at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital.

She has served on the board of directors of several medical organizations, including the American Board of Medical Genetics; the Association of Professors of Human and Medical Genetics (president); the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (president); and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (member and vice president).

Dr. Demmer has received countless awards for teaching from Tufts, Dartmouth and UMass Memorial Medical School. Charlotte Magazine and Boston Magazine have recognized her as a Top Doctor.

She received a master’s in biochemistry and her medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where she also completed a fellowship in medical genetics. She completed residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Dr. Demmer is involved in research on the development of evidence-based guidelines for genetic conditions as well as the ethics of genetic testing.

When she’s not working, Dr. Demmer enjoys spending time with her husband, their 7 children and 2 grandchildren. They love to travel, hike and participate in a variety of water activities on the lake near their home. When not outside, she can often be found baking, cooking or reading.
