Hospital at Home Helps Teacher Return to What She Loves Most

Kindergarten teachers know how to handle surprises — from big feelings to little moments of magic — but Alecia Guthrie never imagined her school year would be interrupted by an unexpected health diagnosis.

After learning she had a brain tumor and undergoing surgery to remove it, Alecia carefully navigated the highs and lows of healing. She leaned on her loving husband and her Atrium Health Navicent At Home care team to find her way back to her students.

Today, she’s not only teaching again, but she’s also wearing a new badge of honor: Teacher of the Year.

More than a headache

Alecia

In the spring of 2025, Alecia was finishing the school year when she noticed persistent headaches and dizziness had started creeping into her daily routine. At first, she brushed them aside, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

After school one Friday, Alecia underwent a CT scan. And before she could settle in at home that night, her phone rang: The scan revealed a large mass on the back of her brain. She was told to go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

"I was completely shocked," Alecia recalled. "I had just driven home and felt fine."

Alecia and her husband, Jonathan, decided to head to Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center, where specialists confirmed the diagnosis and quickly developed a treatment plan.

Days later, Alecia underwent brain surgery and most of the tumor was removed successfully.  She felt immediate relief from her symptoms.

"I don't have any headaches now," she said. "I just knew something wasn't right, and I'm grateful I listened to my body."

Life after surgery

Alecia

While the surgery was a major milestone, it was just the first step toward recovery.

After spending several days in the hospital, Alecia returned home feeling weak and worried about the incision that spanned the length of her head.

That's when Atrium Health Navicent at Home became an important part of her journey.

Through home visits with her nurse, Darah O’Quinn, Alecia received the care, education and support she needed to heal safely in familiar surroundings. Darah monitored her incision, reviewed recovery instructions and even found creative ways to keep her bandages secure.

Because the location of the incision made dressings difficult to manage, Darah cleverly suggested headbands to help keep everything in place. She also braided Alecia's hair, so the shaved portion of her head would be less noticeable.

"Home health gives us the opportunity to care for patients in a very personal way. We're there not only to monitor recovery, but also to help patients navigate the challenges that come with it," said Darah. " Helping with Alecia’s hair and finding ways to make her more comfortable helped her feel more confident during a difficult time. Sometimes, it’s the small things that make the all the difference."

Back to the classroom

Shortly after Alecia’s return to the classroom, she was named Teacher of the Year.

Alecia's story serves as a reminder that recovery is more than healing physically. It's about restoring confidence, independence and a sense of normalcy after a life-changing diagnosis.
