During the 2023-2024 academic year, salaries for Carolinas Medical Center trainees are as follows:

  • PGY-1 – $61,608
  • PGY-2 – $64,362
  • PGY-3 – $67,014
  • PGY-4 – $70,176
  • PGY-5 – $73,236
  • PGY-6 – $75,990
  • PGY-7 – $78,744
  • PGY-8 – $82,110

  • Carolinas Medical Center provides residents, at every level, 20 weekdays* of paid vacation.
  • Scholarly Expense Allowance: $1,900 for Continuing Education and Scholarly Activity funds are provided per academic year. For more details, see Scholarly Expense Allowance Policy in the GME Policies.
  • Health Insurance Plans: Atrium Health offers two health plan options to select from. Health insurance coverage begins on the first day of employment. Option 1: LiveWell Health Savings Plan with a savings account (HSA): Coverage provided for fellow and eligible dependents/spouse with premium paid by Atrium Health. Option 2: LiveWell Health Co-Pay Plan with spending account (FSA): Coverage provided for fellows and eligible dependents/spouse. The plan has a significantly subsidized biweekly premiums paid by the fellow (the difference in cost between the HSA plan and the FSA plan) through payroll deduction.
  • Dental Insurance: Employer paid premiums for Dental coverage under DELTA Dental for fellow and eligible dependents/spouse.
  • Vision Insurance: Vision coverage by Community Eye Care with no copay for eye exams and annual allowance for eyewear up to $200 per year for fellow and eligible dependents/spouse. Premiums are paid by the fellow.
  • Medical, Family, and Parental Leave: Per Medical Leave Policy and Atrium Health Policy HR 4.09.
  • Professional Liability Insurance: Full coverage (liability, life, and disability) while functioning in the role of a House Staff only. External moonlighting activity is not covered.
  • Wellness: Months with a fifth Thursday is Fellow AM Wellness. Additionally, there is a Physician Wellness Clinic, and opportunities for department wellness recreational activities and classes.
  • 401K
  • Lab Coats – Three coats are provided initially. One coat allowed each subsequent academic year. Laundry service provided at no charge. See Lab Coat Laundry Services Guidelines in the GME Policies

  • Free reserved parking for residents and fellows
