Recent Highlights

New clinic in South Carolina: Our program expanded access to cardio-oncology care by opening a clinic in Greenville, SC in the spring of 2023. Our physician and advanced practice providers develop personalized care plans for each patient while providing clinical consultation and optimizing medication. This new clinic enables patients to receive much-needed, highquality subspecialty care locally.

New cardiac rehabilitation program: We received a generous donation from the Dowd family to formally establish the Dowd Foundation Center for Cardio-Oncology. These funds are enabling us to develop a comprehensive, diseasespecific cardiac rehabilitation program tailored to cardiooncology patients. As part of this effort, we are enrolling a pilot group of cardiac amyloidosis patients in a research study that investigates how cardiac rehabilitation can improve care outcomes, shape treatment best practices and influence the payor landscape for these services.

Innovations

Advanced cardiac imaging: We are incorporating advanced cardiac imaging, including CT and MRI, for early detection and adjudication of cardio-toxicity. This will enable the potential adjustment of a patient’s cancer treatment in ways that prevent heart damage and preserve heart function.

Early detection of amyloidosis: Our program leverages a decentralized, cardiac MRI-first strategy for early detection of cardiac amyloidosis. This can enable early treatment that slows disease progression. We also participate in the national MRI registry for amyloidosis.

Using specialty nurses to streamline care: Our nurse care managers minimize cancer treatment interruptions by streamlining care coordination across oncology, pharmacy, imaging and other disciplines. Patients are connected to all necessary supportive care within the multidisciplinary team, whether it’s at Sanger with Atrium Health Levine Cancer or other specialty partners.
