Surgical Critical Care

The goal of the Surgical Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center is to provide exposure to complex surgical critical care in order to prepare APPs with the skills necessary to be successful in delivering excellent critical care. The fellowship will allow both nurse practitioners and physician assistants to develop the knowledge base to perform procedures and life-saving interventions in a high acuity patient population.

In addition to scheduled simulation labs, fellows will have real-time exposure to patient care in the intensive care unit, operating room, inpatient floor, outpatient clinic and the trauma bay in the emergency department. They will have vast experience in many surgical procedures, including simple and complex suturing, tracheostomy, thoracostomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, bronchoscopy, central venous catheter insertion, arterial catheter insertion, pulmonary artery catheter insertion, wound debridement, thoracentesis, inferior vena cava filter insertion and hemodialysis catheter insertion. There will also be opportunities for other surgical procedures while on emergency general surgery and general surgery rotations.
