The Atrium Health Center for Advanced Practice Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is committed to preparing our APP workforce to excel as competent providers and confident leaders within our healthcare teams. Our one-year, post-graduate fellowship program is appropriate for new NP and PA graduates, as well as experienced APPs wishing to change discipline or career paths.

Due to the pace that healthcare and modalities of healthcare delivery are growing and changing, we are seeking dynamic, inquisitive, hardworking, and committed NPs and PAs eager to serve the populations and communities who seek care at Atrium Health. Our primary training location is Charlotte, NC with post-Fellowship employment eligibility at any of our enterprise locations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, or Alabama.

We have designed a clinical program that symbiotically combines specialty-specific rotations and didactic curriculum with enterprise-specific professional resources that culminate in the development of diverse and advanced skillsets. Our graduates are highly competitive for employment and thrive within Atrium Health. The APP Fellowship experiences derived from quality clinical rotations, mentored professional activities, immersion into systems-based practice and experience with clinical scholarly work; allows the fellowship program to serve as an ideal pipeline of highly trained APPs across any of our geographic locations. We remain committed to training and retaining our graduates wherever and whenever possible.

Goals of the Fellowship:

• Enhance the clinical knowledge and expertise of our APPs needed to optimize practice and demonstrate improved clinical outcomes within Atrium Health
• Serve as an immersion in specialty-specific experiences that prepare APPs for critical thinking above the level received in formal education
• Expand our APPs knowledge of evidenced-based practice, basic research techniques, guideline development and quality improvement initiatives, aimed to improve patient care outcomes within Atrium Health

Post-Graduate Acute Care Fellowship Program

The post-graduate acute care fellowship program allows both NPs and PAs to develop the knowledge base to perform procedures and life-saving interventions in various high-acuity patient populations and clinical scenarios. The fellowship curriculum targets common areas of difficulty with transition to practice and prepares the APP to perform in a specialized acute care setting while developing foundational specialty-specific skills and knowledge.

Acute care fellows experience:

• Rotations in ICU, off-service specialties and interservice subspecialties
• Bimonthly critical care roundtable didactics
• Weekly specialty didactics

Acute care tracks available:

• Medical critical care (AGACNP and PA)
• Surgical critical care (AGACNP and PA)
• Cardiology (AGACNP, AGPCNP, FNP and PA)
• Adult hospitalist (AGACNP and PA)
• Emergency medicine (PAs, ENP or dual certification as FNP/ACNP)
• Cardiothoracic surgery (AGACNP and PA) - Spring start only
• Surgery specialties (AGACNP and PA)
• Pediatric hospitalist (PNP-AC and PA)
• Neonatal ICU (NNP (Neonatal NP) and PA) - Fall start only

Post-Graduate Primary Care/Urgent Care Fellowship Program

The Post-Graduate Primary Care and Urgent Care Fellowship programs allow both NPs and PAs to further refine their knowledge base while caring for patients in the ambulatory care setting. Didactics and clinical experiences focus on chronic disease state management, acute illness/injury visits and wellness care. Fellows will learn to skillfully utilize resources to efficiently navigate the complex components of a fast-paced office environment while delivering quality, patient-centered care.

Primary/urgent care tracks available:

• Family medicine (FNP and PA) - Fall start only
• Rural family medicine (FNP and PA) – Fall start only
• Urgent care (FNP and PA)

Post-Graduate Specialty Care Fellowship Program

The Post-Graduate Specialty Care Fellowship program offers unique learning opportunities in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Fellows will participate in high-acuity patient experiences combined with services rendered in an office setting to promote a versatile healthcare provider equipped with a wide range of skills.

Specialty care tracks available:

• Urology (AGACNP, AGPCNP, FNP and PA)
• Psychiatry/Behavioral health (PMHNP and PA) - Fall start only
• Hematology/Oncology (AGACNP, AGPCNP, FNP and PA)
• Women's Health (FNP, WHNP, PA)

Eligibility

• Completion of an accredited PA or NP master's program* 
• National board certification as a PA or NP*
• North Carolinas licensure as a PA or NP*
• DEA licensure*
• Designated drug screening*
• Acceptable criminal background check
• BLS (and ACLS or PALS for acute care tracks)*

*These items must be completed no later than six weeks prior to start date of fellowship.

The number of fellows accepted into the Atrium Health APP Fellowship shall be determined solely by Atrium Health. Applicants will be notified within 12 weeks of the posted deadlines above if they have been selected for an interview.
