Family medicine is a rapidly growing specialty with need for skilled nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs)  to promote patient access to quality and comprehensive care. Provider visits in family medicine are focused on a collaborative approach to chronic disease management and follow-up, acute illness, injury visits and wellness care. Patients presenting to family medicine practices pose individual complexities for every age, race, sex, socioeconomic status, health literacy, organ system and disease process.

The Atrium Health Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Family Medicine is a 12-month program designed to advance the NP/PA’s comprehension of complex disease management in caring for the ambulatory patient across the lifespan. The family medicine fellow will develop skills in assessing the biological, clinical and behavioral needs of the individual patient and family, and learn to navigate healthcare systems to provide appropriate referrals, testing and interprofessional collaboration. The family medicine fellow gains increased understanding and clinical application of leading patient care delivery and decision-making through various practice-based learning environments such as simulated patient encounters and skills, specialty rotations and classroom didactics.
