Biography
“Life is precious. I’m so grateful for the opportunity every day to walk with children and families through highs and lows, helping them understand their diagnoses and feel the best possible, as we work toward something better.”
Dr. Hinson is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology (cancer and blood disorders). She specializes in treating bleeding and clotting disorders, leukemia, lymphoma, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and severe aplastic anemia.
She is the director of pediatric hemostasis and thrombosis and the director of outpatient operations at Levine Children's Cancer & Blood Disorders, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center. She is a Hyundai Hope on Wheels grant recipient and a Charlotte Magazine Top Doctor for several years.
She received her medical degree and completed her residency and a fellowship at Duke University.
Dr. Hinson supported both of her parents through their own cancer diagnoses. Walking their journeys with them taught her about the complexities of caring for patients with these diseases and how it impacts so much of their lives.
As a Hyundai Hope on Wheels grant recipient, Dr. Hinson is the lead principal investigator (PI) for a study on immune dysfunction after completion of chemotherapy.
She is also involved in quality improvement initiatives, studying the best use of computerized patient health portals and the best methods to improve patient and family-centered doctors' rounds.
Additionally, she is the PI for several clinical trials: one using edoxaban for thrombosis and crovalimab for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and another for the treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).
She and her husband, an attorney, have 4 little girls and a yellow Labrador. They spend their time together running to dance or soccer practices, taking walks, hiking, traveling or just watching movies. She loves to be in the sun and read fiction and occasionally leadership or inspirational books.
