Melissa Schutt, MD

“Hospitalized children are inspiring. Most come to the hospital, stay for a few days and then are playing on the way out the door. Kids who are hospitalized longer adjust to their environment. They play, sing and dance in their rooms and in the hallways. They celebrate life events like birthdays, holidays and learning to walk and talk. Children with more complex illnesses can adapt quickly to tubes and machines that help them feed and breathe. I try to absorb that inspiration for myself and my own kids when times seem hard and hope that others can as well.”

Dr. Schutt is board certified in pediatrics and specializes in pediatric hospital medicine. She cares for newborns and inpatient children. She is the medical director of newborn services for Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital. She focuses on helping new families adjust to life with a new baby and helps set them on the right track to seamlessly transition to their outpatient pediatricians.

She received her undergraduate degree at Saint Louis University and her medical degree at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Schutt is involved in numerous quality improvement projects in the newborn nursery setting, including standardizing care for newborns, antibiotic stewardship, and improving care for late preterm infants and opioid-exposed infants.

Dr. Schutt is married and has 2 daughters, a son and a chocolate Lab who keep her busy outside of work. When they are not shuttling between soccer, gymnastics and swimming, the family loves to escape to their favorite place: Disney World. They also enjoy hiking, family bike rides, boating and trying out new cuisines.
