Hearing is an important part of how children learn, communicate and connect with others. Difficulty hearing can affect everything from a child’s speech and learning to their social development. At Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital, our pediatric audiologists help identify hearing concerns early so your child can grow, thrive and communicate successfully.

Our audiology team is specially trained to care for babies, children and teenagers with hearing concerns. We also have experience working with children who have a wide range of needs, including autism, Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and developmental delays. We’ll work closely with your family to provide the care and support your child deserves.

When to see an audiologist

Hearing loss can happen for many reasons. Some children are born with hearing loss, while others may develop hearing problems due to illness, certain medications, fluid in the ears, injury or earwax buildup.

Your child may need to see an audiologist if you notice or experience any of the following:

  • You have concerns about your child’s speech or language development
  • Your child has a medical condition linked to hearing loss
  • Your child has had frequent or severe ear infections
  • Your child did not pass a hearing screening
  • Childhood hearing loss runs in your family
  • Your child was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for longer than five days

If you’re unsure if your child needs a hearing test, our team can help guide you.

Services

Our audiologists take time to understand your child’s hearing needs and explain results in clear, simple language.

Our services include:

  • Hearing tests for children from birth through age 21
  • Newborn hearing screenings

Together, we decide next steps and treatment options, which might include a referral to a pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist for a medical evaluation.
