The Fontan Care Program at Atrium Health Levine Children’s is dedicated to providing a continuum of care for children who have undergone the Fontan procedure. The Fontan surgery is the third and final palliative surgery in a series of operations for single ventricle heart defects, the procedure helps to route oxygen-depleted blood directly to the lungs so it can then enter the heart and be pumped throughout the body. While most pediatric patients can enjoy an active childhood following this procedure, ongoing care is essential to minimize potential complications and support their overall well-being.

Our program offers a holistic approach to post-Fontan care, addressing every aspect of life after surgery. With a multidisciplinary team of experts and a dedicated focus on education and support, we ensure that both patients and families feel empowered and confident in their journey. From early detection of potential complications to tailored guidance on nutrition and exercise, the Fontan Care Program is committed to helping children thrive.
