Facing a heart condition is difficult. When you choose Atrium Health Levine Children’s, you’re putting your child in experienced, compassionate hands. Patients come to our outpatient cardiology team when they have an existing heart problem, or symptoms like shortness of breath or an irregular heartbeat.

Our doctors use state-of-the-art tools to evaluate your child’s heart. Then we select the best treatment – from medication to surgery – to give them a healthier future.

Conditions we treat

Our team of pediatric experts has treated all types of patients with heart conditions like:

  • Heart murmurs: Usually, doctors hear a “lub-dub” sound when they listen to the heartbeat. If your child has a heart murmur, their heart may make a “swishing” or “whooshing” sound. If this is the case for your child, our team will figure out what’s causing it and make a personalized treatment plan for their condition.
  • Chest pain: We evaluate a child’s medical history and do a physical exam to get to the root of what’s causing a child’s chest pain. Then we’ll create a treatment plan tailored to each child’s individual needs.
  • Abnormal cardiac rhythm or arrhythmia: Some children’s hearts beat too quickly or too slowly. Our team will use state-of-the-art tools to understand your child’s heart problem and treat it with medication or noninvasive electrophysiology procedures.
  • Congenital heart defects: These are heart problems that children are born with. Our outpatient cardiology department coordinates with our other pediatric cardiology and adult congenital subspecialists, providing the care your child needs from infancy to adulthood.
  • High blood pressure: This happens when blood flows too strongly through arteries (the tubes that carry blood through the body). In coordination with our pediatric nephrology team, we can help determine if high blood pressure is related to the heart, and how high blood pressure can affect your child’s heart.
  • Exertional symptoms (like lightheadedness and fainting): If your child has fainting spells, dizziness or a fast heart rate when standing up, they might have a heart problem. We’ve seen hundreds of children with these symptoms, and we’ll help you get to the root of them in your child.

Outpatient cardiology services

Your child will have access to the latest tools and services to help them manage their heart condition, including:

  • Electrophysiology: Where our team studies your child’s heartbeat and uses advanced tools to regulate it if needed.
  • Metabolic stress testing: Where we evaluate how your child’s heart performs under stress (while they’re exercising) so we can create a treatment plan.
  • Nutrition and dietary support: To keep hearts healthy through diet and exercise.
  • Supportive services: Ranging from social work to child life specialists who can help families with everything from counseling to finding financial help.
