- We’re home to the nation’s fourth busiest orthopedic trauma center and provide advanced care for everything from pelvic and acetabular fractures to high-energy joint injuries and osteomyelitis.
Breakthrough Research
We’re also leading the way – through our research – in the development and deployment of innovative treatments that will shape the future standard of care.
Our faculty is involved in more than 20 externally funded, prospective research studies, including several investigator-initiated trials.
We are:
- One of the largest accrual sites for the Major Extremity Trauma and Rehabilitation Consortium and have enrolled over 7,000 patients across 18 research projects funded by federal agencies
- Addressing the opioid crisis through a first-of-its-kind clinical support platform called PRIMUM (Prescription Reporting with Immediate Medication Utilization Mapping), a CDC-funded study
- Helping limb salvage patients maximize their ability to function post injury through our Return to Performance Pathway program
- Creating a mobility toolkit system to capture 3D kinematic data on patients – previously only available in a gate lab – supported by a grant from the AO Strategy Fund
- Developing ways to improve trauma care via the Carolinas Trauma Network Research Center of Excellence
- Members of the Southeast Fracture Consortium and Orthopedic Trauma Research Consortium
Top Orthopedic Residency Program
Dedicated to training the next generation of leaders, our orthopedic residency program – ranked third in the Southeast by Doximity in 2018 – attracts the most promising young doctors from across the nation.
These residents and fellows are drawn by the opportunity to get hands-on experience under the renowned faculty at Musculoskeletal Institute and work on a wide variety of cases at one of the busiest trauma hospitals in the nation – as well as in communities across our large footprint.
Training these up-and-coming physicians and surgeons – and answering their challenging questions – pushes us to constantly evaluate our protocols and find ways to make orthopedic care even better.
