Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders

We use a team approach that brings pediatric oncologists, radiologists and other specialists together to combine their expertise for every patient. We treat a wide variety of cancers, including:

• Bone and soft tissue sarcomas, including osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma
• Brain tumors
• Leukemia and Lymphoma
• Neuroblastoma
• Wilms'/kidney tumors
• Other rare tumors

We’re home to one of the region’s most advanced centers for pediatric blood disorders, including a world-class sickle cell program and an accredited hemophilia treatment center (HTC). We treat a variety of blood disorders, including:

• Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease
• Sickle cell disease
• Thrombosis
• Other bleeding and clotting disorders

• Outpatient chemotherapy treatment that lets some children get chemotherapy in the comfort of their own homes.
• A blood and marrow transplant program built just for children. These transplants can be a promising option for kids with conditions like leukemia and sickle cell.
• A developmental therapeutics program that offers some of the newest, most innovative therapies for pediatric cancers and blood disorders.
• Inpatient rehabilitation services that help kids recover and get stronger.
• Proton beam therapy, a leading-edge type of radiation that can treat pediatric cancer with fewer side effects and lower long-term risks. Patients also benefit from the combined expertise of Levine Children’s and Levine Cancer during treatment.
• MIBG therapy, which is a highly targeted radiation treatment for children with neuroblastoma and other cancers. Our Isabella Santos Foundation MIBG Therapy Suite is one of the few MIBG rooms in the region.

Cancers and blood disorders impact every part of your child’s life. That’s why we offer support services to help families navigate these illnesses. These services include:

• In-hospital support staff and amenities, including experts like social workers, tutors and spiritual caregivers. We also have amenities like a library and kitchen to make staying in the hospital as easy and comfortable as possible.

• Survivorship services that help children and families get the right medical care and avoid complications once their cancer is in remission.
• Pediatric psychologists to help your child stay resilient and strong, during and after treatment.
• Child life specialists who help explain treatments in kid-friendly ways, help children deal with nerves and worries about treatment, and help family members, teachers and classmates understand your child’s illness.
• ARISE Cancer Consortium™, a collaborative effort with other children's hospitals across the Carolinas that focuses on leading-edge clinical trials and therapies and improving care for the whole patient.
