If your child has been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, they need care from experts who know the best ways to support kids with this rare condition. At Atrium Health Levine Children’s, we treat many children with pulmonary hypertension and can offer innovative therapies to help your child live a happier, healthier life.

About pulmonary hypertension

Most people have heard of hypertension, also called high blood pressure. This happens when blood flows under higher than normal pressure through the arteries (the tubes that carry blood through the body). Pulmonary hypertension is a rare disease where you only have high blood pressure in the arteries in your lungs.

Pulmonary hypertension can occur as an isolated problem or in children with lung disease or a congenital heart defect.

Treating pulmonary hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension is a serious condition, but new treatment options are continually becoming available. We often treat children with one or more therapies including:

  • Oxygen: Some children benefit from oxygen therapy. The additional oxygen can help to relax the lung blood vessels.
  • Medication: Some medications can help the heart tolerate higher blood pressure in the lungs. We may deliver these medications during catherization procedures, where we insert a thin tube through a child’s vein and into their heart. Each child responds a little differently to these medications, so we monitor them closely and adjust their treatment plan as needed.
