Most people have heard of hypertension, also called high blood pressure. This happens when blood flows under higher than normal pressure through the arteries (the tubes that carry blood through the body). Pulmonary hypertension is a rare disease where you only have high blood pressure in the arteries in your lungs.
Pulmonary hypertension can occur as an isolated problem or in children with lung disease or a congenital heart defect.
Pulmonary hypertension is a serious condition, but new treatment options are continually becoming available. We often treat children with one or more therapies including:
Pulmonary hypertension can impact many aspects of a child’s life. That’s why we offer resources to support kids and their families including:
The HEARTest Yard. A program that provides in-home nursing support for children and families as they transition from the hospital to their home. This program is funded by the Greg Olsen Foundation and was launched after the former Carolina Panthers football player and his wife, Kara, had a baby with a severe heart defect.
Camp LUCK. This free summer camp is for kids with heart conditions and their siblings. This camp helps kids and their families create a community of people sharing similar experiences.
Cardiac neurodevelopmental program. Some heart conditions can impact a child’s brain development. This program monitors your child’s brain development as they grow. Our experts can help your child overcome any learning delays and other challenges that happen as a result of their heart condition.
Child life specialists. These experts help kids and families with everything from preparing for medical procedures to managing schoolwork with a severe illness.
Nutritionists. Our nutritionists make sure kids get all the nutrients they need to stay strong.
Nurse navigators. These nurses support and build close relationships with each patient and family. They become experts on each child’s condition and medical history, teach parents at-home care, attend appointments to answer questions and discuss treatments, and more.
Social workers. Our social work team helps families cope with the challenges of caring for a child with pulmonary hypertension. They help them find support groups, financial assistance and more.
Pastoral care. Our chaplains offer religious and spiritual support when families request a visit.
Part of a world-class heart program. We're home to some of the region's most experienced pediatric cardiologists. And we work closely with Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute to give our patients access to the latest and most effective treatments.
Experience: Children with pulmonary hypertension require complex care. Our team has decades of experience treating this rare condition, giving us the expertise to know which treatments work best.
A comprehensive team: Most children who have pulmonary hypertension also have another condition like congenital heart disease. This means several doctors need to work together to manage multiple complex illnesses at the same time. Our heart team works hand-in-hand with pediatricians, pulmonologists, hematologists and other experts to understand and treat all aspects of your child’s health.
Advanced cardiac catheterization labs: Catheters are thin, spaghetti-like tubes that can be used to measure blood pressure and take detailed pictures of the heart. We also use catheterization procedures to test the blood pressure in the lungs. Our catheterization lab is one of the region’s most advanced pediatric facilities, giving kids access to procedures that are less invasive than surgery, while keeping radiation exposure to a minimum.
Innovative treatments: Researchers are developing promising new therapies for pulmonary hypertension, but many of these drugs require a team of doctors, nurses and pharmacists to administer. We’re one of the few hospitals in our region with the resources and expertise to offer these new treatments to eligible patients.
Support for families near and far: Because many hospitals aren’t equipped to administer treatment for pulmonary hypertension, some children travel long distances for treatment at Levine Children’s. For non-local patients, we’ll work closely with your child's local cardiologist and pediatrician so you can stay close to home whenever possible.
Lifelong care: Children with pulmonary hypertension are living longer, more active lives. Our team will support your child into adolescence and then transition them into our adult program to seamlessly continue care as they grow up. We also support kids by monitoring brain development, nutrition and other aspects of life that may be affected by a heart problem.
