Why Carolinas Medical Center? In pursuit of a PGY2 residency year in ID, I was seeking a program that offered rotational experiences among a diverse set of patient populations, fostered strong multi-disciplinary collaboration within stewardship practice, and permitted continued opportunity for research and teaching. The PGY2 program at CMC aligned with these aims at baseline, seen in offered opportunities to care for patients of the Levine Cancer Institute, Levine Children’s Hospital, solid organ transplant center, and outpatient HIV clinic; the multi-disciplinary nature of the ASN stewardship program, strong research program, and plentiful teaching opportunities. However, my experiences at CMC as a PGY1 resident are what enlightened me to the unique strengths of the program. As a PGY1 resident I had the privilege of working with several of the wonderful ID/ASN pharmacists in both research and rotational experiences. Through these experiences, I witnessed their contagious enthusiasm for the field of ID and experienced the thoughtful attention with which they vest in the progress of their learners. Furthermore, what stood out to me was that they were not only supportive of my learning journey but were also admirably supportive of one another. I believe that with a uniquely large team of ~17 ASN pharmacists, this supportive and collaborative nature facilitates an unmatched learning environment. During my time in training to-date, I have felt included and continue to feel an immense amount of support from all disciplines in the ID community. It has made it effortless to take on unfamiliar responsibilities with enthusiasm, and I believe it will continue to promote a successful training year.
