Program Overview

The Atrium Health Specialty Pharmacy Service (AH SPS) is a health-system-integrated outpatient medication service providing care coordination and clinical services for patients treated with high-touch, high-dollar, self-administered specialty medications. AH SPS has 19 clinical service lines within the disciplines of oncology, hematology, inflammatory disease, hepatology, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease, cardiology, HIV, pulmonology, cystic fibrosis, bleeding disorders and others serving over 10,000 patients annually across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. AH SPS is dual accredited by URAC and ACHC with oncology distinction.

Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is a 951-bed academic teaching hospital with residency programs in pharmacy as well as medical and dental specialties. Along with Carolinas College of Health Sciences, it provides an educational environment for more than 1,000 residents, medical students, pharmacy students, physician extenders, nursing students and other allied health professionals annually.

Program Structure 

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency with a Specialty Pharmacy Focus within the Atrium Health Specialty Pharmacy Service (AH SPS) is a 12-month program designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop the resident to fulfill the major functions of a Specialty Pharmacist.  The residency's emphasis is to train the pharmacist to support and manage specialty pharmacy clinical care and operations across the continuum of care. Residents will graduate with well-rounded skills in the specialty pharmacy, ambulatory, and inpatient settings and can pursue early commit to Atrium Health’s regional PGY2 programs.
