Ambulatory Specialty Pharmacy Service
The Atrium Health Specialty Pharmacy Service (AH SPS) is a health system–integrated ambulatory care model that provides comprehensive medication management for patients receiving high-touch, high-cost specialty therapies. Serving patients across multiple states in the Southeast, AH SPS supports a broad range of complex disease states, including oncology, hematology/bleeding disorders, neurology, immunology, inflammatory conditions, HIV, cystic fibrosis, and gastroenterology.
What distinguishes our program is our embedded, service-line–aligned pharmacist model. Specialty pharmacists—many of whom have completed PGY1 and PGY2 residency training—are integrated directly within multidisciplinary clinic teams, practicing alongside physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Pharmacists provide longitudinal patient care within their specialty areas, including pediatric oncology, pediatric hematology and sickle cell disease, classical hematology and bleeding disorders, neurology, pediatric cystic fibrosis, pediatric inflammatory GI, adult rheumatology and dermatology, and HIV.
This model enables pharmacists to function as clinical specialists, delivering direct patient care in clinic settings while also coordinating medication access, monitoring therapy outcomes, managing toxicities, and optimizing adherence. Pharmacists collaborate closely with centralized specialty pharmacy operations and other clinical pharmacy teams across the health system to ensure seamless, patient-centered care. For PGY1 residents and students, AH SPS offers a unique opportunity to experience ambulatory specialty practice, combining clinical decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration, and population health management in a highly specialized environment.
Myers Park
Located in the Dilworth neighborhood within walking distance to Carolinas Medical Center, this practice site provides continuity care to indigent patients and includes multiple subspecialties. The site has a pharmacist-run anticoagulation clinic and provides pharmacy services including management of diabetes, hypertension, pediatric asthma, HIV and tobacco cessation. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and adherence services are also provided. Myers Park Clinic also has a 340B dispensing pharmacy to serve the prescription needs of patients receiving care at Myers Park Clinic, Elizabeth Family Medicine, Biddle Point Family Practice, NorthPark Clinic, or those being discharged from one of our 340B eligible acute care facilities. Medical residents are incorporated into the diverse range of services at the site. In the pharmacy, medication synchronization, MTM, and patient assistance services are provided. A specific formulary is closely followed to ensure cost of medications is not a barrier for high-risk patients.
Carolinas Medical Center
the largest facility in Atrium Health. An advanced mainframe computer system, computerized physician order entry, Omnicell dispensing machines, Med-Carousel, and McKesson Robot-RX support medication distribution. Approximately 17,000 doses per day are dispensed from the inpatient pharmacy. IV therapy is an integral part of the CMC pharmacy department; in addition to preparation of routine IV admixtures (approximately 1,600 admixtures per day), pharmacists review and prepare approximately 60-70 3-in-1 hyperalimentation solutions and 73 oncologic admixtures per day. The department is also responsible for the preparation of intravenous investigational products. Pharmacy services are provided 24 hours a day. Decentralized pharmacy services are provided from 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. Clinical staff pharmacists are responsible for order verification, pharmacokinetic monitoring and consults, renal dosing, pharmacy interchanges, including IV to PO, providing drug information and reporting adverse drug events.
CarolinaCARE
CarolinaCARE, located in Charlotte, is the home-delivery pharmacy for those insured on Atrium Health's employee health and prescription drug plan. CarolinaCARE is also home to the specialty pharmacy dispensing services for any contracted insurers. The pharmacy employs over 30 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who provide quality care and excellent customer service through a variety of clinical and pharmacy services. Atrium Health's insurance plan covers over 100,000 employees and their dependents in all of Atrium's markets including the Charlotte Metro region, Atrium Health Navicent, Atrium Health Floyd and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Clinical pharmacists at CarolinaCARE provide chronic disease state management (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, heart failure, asthma, COPD, etc.) for those on Atrium Health's insurance plan, as well as engage in plan design, benefit investigation, and utilization management.
