Why you chose CMC: Compared to any other program, I felt the most inspired, affirmed, energized, and proud of the physician I would become here at CMC. The training offered is truly top-notch and unparalleled. Everyone made me feel instantly at home and well-supported. Plus, the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with literal legends in emergency medicine? It was an easy decision!
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: Charlotte is the place to be! There are endless opportunities for professional and personal development, welcoming people of all backgrounds, and a myriad of interests to cultivate/pursue. There's never a dull day inside or outside the department.
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: TBD, apart from continuing to live out my childhood's wildest dreams and create cherished memories for a lifetime.

Why you chose CMC: I knew CMC was the place for me after completing my AI! Everyone was so welcoming and kind. It was clear that the faculty were passionate about teaching and were supportive of the residents. I love that we have so many resources and support services that allow us to provide the best possible care to the diverse community that CMC serves. Plus, it was clear from my AI and the pre-interview social that all the residents genuinely enjoyed spending time with each other, making the effort to see each other even after long shifts.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: I love how green the city is! As someone who spent most of their life living in small towns, Charlotte is unique in that it has all the great things a city has to offer, while also providing several opportunities to get away from the big city life. There are so many outdoor activities to participate in. Whether you like running, walking your dogs, biking, hiking, or exploring new restaurants, there is something for you that is usually just a short drive or a walk away.
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: I am still trying to figure that out, but I will probably be practicing community emergency medicine; hopefully, somewhere in North Carolina. I also foresee myself having some administrative/leadership role, whether that be in the hospital or the community.

Why you chose CMC: I just had a feeling that CMC is where I was meant to be :) My interview day had me grinning the ENTIRE time (which can be really hard to do on Zoom)—the genuine camaraderie between faculty and residents was so great to witness, and I knew I wanted to be in a program that prioritized social support both personally and professionally. What really sealed the deal was when I came for an informal second look and several residents took the time to chat with me in the department and even go out for drinks later that night just to hang out! I felt genuinely cared for and supported just as an interviewee, so I could only imagine how it would feel to actually be a resident at CMC. During my intern orientation month, so many residents and faculty took the time to check in on me to make sure I was transitioning well and to celebrate my successes on shift (no matter how small)! It’s truly such a wonderful feeling to have this huge village surrounding you during a really challenging season. Everyone says that once you’re here, you’re part of the CMC family for life, and I’m so grateful for that!
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: Love about living in Charlotte: Countless breweries, tons of greenery and outdoor activities, Whitewater Center
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: Splitting my time between clinical practice and academics, raising a family, realizing my dream of opening a fun little ice cream shop!

Why you chose CMC: The CMC EM reputation precedes itself and I didn't have to be convinced that it was a strong program, but I really got pumped to come here after meeting residents in the social. Even on Zoom, it was immediately obvious how much fun they have together, and now that I'm here I see that I could not have made a more accurate assessment.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: There's so much to do and something for everyone. Ever since I moved to Charlotte, every free day has been filled with checking out new restaurants, breweries, parks, pickleball courts, live music events, the Whitewater Center—anything you can think of! The city is so young and energetic, and it has really made for an easy transition for those of us that moved away from home.
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: I see myself working in a community ED somewhere in the southeast or closer to home in Kentucky. But since my class just started and we still have a lot of time to explore options, it wouldn't surprise me if my 10-year plan changed a handful of times between now and PGY-3. Keeping options open!

Why you chose CMC: During my rotation as a 4th year medical student, I was in awe by the camaraderie among residents, nursing, techs and attendings. Everyone was committed to becoming a better version of themselves each day. I sought a program that would challenge and inspire me to reach my full potential as an emergency medicine physician, and I knew CMC was the perfect place for that.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: When I'm not working, I love being outside and there are so many outdoor activities in Charlotte! I also love being close to family and friends.
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: To be determined...I have strong interests in critical care, rural EM and medical education. Would love to create a career where I can combine all of those things in some way. (Hopefully that career also includes lots of traveling and running!) As for fellowship, I am not totally sure and hope to figure that out in the next year or so.

Why you chose CMC: So many reasons! I valued their emphasis on commitment to the community and truly serving patients, and I knew I would get world class training while feeling supported by faculty and my co-residents! It was clear that the residents were super close, and it was a group I knew I wanted to be a part of.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: I love how there is always something to do, and there are so many fun neighborhoods to explore! I live in a very walkable area that is also near the hospital, and I have loved being able to walk to so many restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and more. There are also so many outdoor activities readily available, and it's an easy drive to the beach and the mountains!
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: I see myself likely pursuing a fellowship after residency and working in academics in some capacity. I love teaching and would also love to continue working in the advocacy realm!

Michael Newton
Hometown: Chapel Hill, NC
College: Bates College, ME
Medical school: University of North Carolina SOM
Why you chose CMC: I wanted to train within a program that has a diverse clinical experience that would make me an excellent clinician who thinks critically and comprehensively about the patient at a physical, emotional, and social level. That is what CMC is about. After residency, I want to have been exposed to as many different presentations of illness as possible and again, I knew that CMC would excel with that. Our hospital is a tertiary care center with a large catchment area, but we also have a community feel. This clinically translates to seeing a large range of patients, those who have several specialists driving their care to the classic bread and butter EM cases. Personally, the fact that CMC is a Level I Adult/Pediatric Trauma center, has increased ICU requirements for its residents and continuous/longitudinal pediatric emergency medicine were all highlights of the program that stood out to me in the way in the way they were implemented. Most importantly, I wanted to train within a program that was supportive of each other in and out of the hospital and I could not have asked for a better cohort of people to learn from, grow with, and spend long hours with. Since my first rotation here, it was easy to see how well people got a long and how cohesive the residents here were, and I wanted to be a part of that! It genuinely feels like one big family; the faculty, the staff, my co-residents and importantly the rest of the patient care team are all united in providing the best patient care possible and growing together. I love our patients, my co-residents are inspiring, and I am excited for these next three years!
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: Getting to live with my fiancé again! But also access to any sort of activity that I could ask for: good basketball, sporting events, music events, trails to explore with our dog, and good food. I like to spend my time outside and although Charlotte is a city, it’s easy to find open space close to and around the area.
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: Undifferentiated! I can see myself doing a critical care fellowship and then figuring out how to staff an ICU but also stay in the ED (logistically will be challenging to do both). I can also see myself working at a critical access hospital, but I am also open to exploring a community/academics hybrid because I will want to be around other learners in some capacity.

College: UNC Chapel Hill
Medical school: Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine
Why you chose CMC: Phenomenal people. The residents, faculty, and everyone else I met were so welcoming and kind. They wanted to get to know me for me, not just what I had done in medical school. That in conjunction with the extremely diverse patient population, tri-brid model of a community program serving a county need with academic level backing and faculty really made this an ideal place to train. You'll never have a dearth of complex nor bread and butter EM patients.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: Food scene, nature nearby (2 hours from the mountains, 2 hours from the beach). Also being from Charlotte meant I had close friends and family nearby. I also enjoy the larger city aspect. This really helps with being back to serve a larger patient population and learning about culture outside of just medicine. Can't forget the Panthers and Hornets (sure, I've been to a game, maybe.)
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: Not exactly sure, but I'd love to be teaching at some level while working. Whether that involves residents, medical students, members of the community, or all of the above, having teaching as a part of my career will keep life exciting and fun.

Why you chose CMC: The program has amazing educators, a diverse patient population, and rigorous training that I know will make me a great EM physician. Most importantly the people are incredible, it is such a supportive environment, you are truly apart of the family.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: It has so many parks and outdoor activities, while also being a great city with amazing food, culture, and breweries!
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: Not entirely sure, potentially fellowship but hopefully working in a mixture of academics and community.

Why you chose CMC: Coming from Texas A&M, I was exposed to numerous faculty who had trained at Carolinas and they described it as the perfect place for somebody who didn't mind hard work and wanted to be pushed.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: The city has so many options for things to do on a night off and can be surprisingly walkable depending on where you live!
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: I have an interest in administration, currently, and would like to pursue something along those lines. A lot can change in 3 years of residency though!

Stephanie Teeling
Hometown: Joliet, IL
College: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Medical school: Medical University of South Carolina
Why you chose CMC: I felt so at ease and welcome on my interview day! Everyone was truly so impressive, yet so humble. I knew I would be challenged here and trained to be able to handle anything in the future. Additionally, the mentorship opportunities here are endless, and I know I will be able to develop my academic interests within EM. When I came for the second look, I instantly knew this was the right program for me. The comradery and engagement from the residents and faculty was so apparent and I knew I found my family!
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: I absolutely love the access to so many outdoor activities. Between the greenway right in my backyard, the White Water Center, and the beach and mountains within a few hours away, I can get plenty of fresh air and exercise. There are also endless breweries and restaurants that I can't wait to continue working my way through.
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: The big question now is fellowship vs going straight into practice. I'm obviously hoping to determine that in the next year or so, but overall, I would LOVE to work in academics. I'm very passionate about teaching and could see myself being a clerkship director for medical students or even involved in residency leadership one day. Outside of work, I'd love to be traveling the world and being near family and friends.

Why you chose CMC: I rotated here as an M4 and was immediately sold by the culture and the people. I love the supportive atmosphere and that the residents are each other's support systems in and out of the hospital. I had so much personal growth during my one month here, I knew it would make me into the physician I wanted to be after three years of residency.
What you love about living in/moving to Charlotte: Nice people, great restaurants, all my favorite brands of workout classes, plenty of outdoor activities, and easy to get around to maximize time off!
What you see yourself doing in 10 years: Raising a family with my (almost) husband Charlie and working in an emergency medicine setting where I'm regularly interacting with learners. TBD on my specific niche or any fellowship training!
