The Residency Program formally began in 1973, but its heritage goes back much further with its predecessor, a general practice training program. Our program accepts 11 residents each year – six in the Elizabeth Track, three in the Biddle Point Track and two in the Union Track.

Residents selected for the Elizabeth and Biddle Point tracks have the majority of their clinical experiences at CMC. Residents selected in the Union Track have their clinical experiences mainly at Atrium Health Union. The three tracks have designated clinical sites. They are CMC-Elizabeth Family Medicine (Elizabeth Track) located immediately adjacent to Atrium Health-Mercy, a partner hospital located only one mile from CMC. Our Biddle Point Track clinic is located at CMC-Biddle Point.  The Union Track clinic is located at Atrium Health Union Family Practice in Monroe, N.C.

Our Family Medicine adult inpatient services are located at two community hospitals, Atrium Health-Mercy and Atrium Health Union, which provide exciting opportunities that enhance our residents' training experience. In addition to doing their off-service inpatient rotations at CMC (a large, tertiary-care medical center with residents of many other specialties). This unique combination provides our residents with learning opportunities at academic and community-based settings.

The Residency Program is fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and has always filled its positions with highly qualified residents. Family Medicine is a key component throughout Atrium Health, including the community's extensive network of private family physicians. Family physicians, whether faculty or residents, are well accepted in this highly collaborative atmosphere throughout the entire medical community.

The program offers an array of special opportunities for unique individuals who aspire to become the most competent and well-prepared family physicians for today's ever-changing healthcare environment.
