Residents of the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency program will experience a unique blend of advanced inpatient training and real-world outpatient training. The program will train residents in a community practice setting representative of future practice sites, embedded into their family medicine clinic alongside a team of faculty, advanced practice providers, mental health and support services.
In turn, our residents become integral to the Atrium Health Cabarrus medical staff through our active Family Medicine Department and hospital committee membership. Throughout the program’s history, our residents become family physicians who care for patients of all ages, gender identities and complexity of health needs.

“The training here is truly unparalleled. The full scope of the training makes me feel like I’d be prepared to take any path in family medicine upon graduation. That along with the unique clinic model’s real-world feel gives Cabarrus Family Medicine a special combination of qualities that’s hard to find elsewhere.”
Sarah Cox, MD
“Cabarrus Family Medicine provides a welcoming environment for residents, staff and patients. It has all the great resources of a large institution and yet it feels like a community program. My experiences have been unparalleled, I feel supported and I am thrilled to be part of this program.”
Jose Delgado-Robles, MD
“I chose CFM for residency because of the unrivaled sense of community I found within the program during a rotation here as a student. It’s obvious that the leadership of this program cares deeply about each resident’s training and strives to make their experience as strong and robust as possible.”
Taylor Sandberg, MD
“Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency offers a unique blend of real-world outpatient training and advanced inpatient training. Residents are each placed into 1 of 4 community-based practices as their clinic home where they function as junior partners, gaining hands-on practice management experience by working closely with their attendings and clinic leadership. Inpatient training occurs at Atrium Health Cabarrus, a premier medical center with 457 beds and 24-hour in-house ICU, NICU, pediatrics, surgery and OB specialist coverage where we have our own Family Medicine Inpatient Unit and open access to critical care units allowing our residents to manage their patients from admission to discharge and then back to their home clinic.”

Cabarrus Family Medicine is the only residency program at our hospital, so residents work one-on-one with specialists and our family medicine faculty. The residency program is highly regarded and supported by our medical staff and hospital leadership. Through our university affiliations, we regularly have medical students working with us, which gives our residents opportunities to teach and mentor. During their training, residents will see a variety of cases from moms with high risk pregnancies to newborns to ICU patients. They will learn from a mix of family medicine hospitalists, full scope family medicine attendings, specialists and PharmDs.
