Welcome to the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program, where we offer a unique blend of advanced inpatient training and real-world outpatient training. Our mission is to develop family physicians with a broad skill set so they can meet the needs of their future communities. Family medicine residency graduates thrive in a variety of practice settings including full scope with OB, hospital medicine, sports medicine, academics and more.

The residency was founded by thought leaders in family medicine and born out of a need for primary care in our community. We aim to develop family physicians who will continue provide a strong voice in the future direction of healthcare.

Cabarrus Family Medicine (CFM) outpatient training utilizes a unique decentralized model. Residents are embedded into to one of 4 community practices as their clinic home for their 3 years. Functioning as junior partners, residents gain hands on practice management experience. The offices are in small- to medium-sized communities in Cabarrus County, just outside the city of Charlotte. Each office is within an easy drive to our medical center and residency office.

Inpatient training occurs at Atrium Health Cabarrus, a premier medical center with over 470 beds and 24-hour in-house ICU, NICU, pediatrics, surgery and OB specialist coverage. We have our own Family Medicine Inpatient Unit and open access to critical care units allowing our residents to manage their patients from admission to discharge. CFM is the only residency program at our hospital, so residents work one-on-one with specialists and our family medicine faculty. Cabarrus Family Medicine is highly regarded and supported by our medical staff and hospital leadership. Through our university affiliations, we regularly have medical students working with us, which gives our residents opportunities to teach and mentor.

We support residents to pursue their passions during residency. We offer tracks for obstetrics, sports medicine and global health, as well as areas of concentration that can be tailored to the resident.

There are numerous options to relax and rejuvenate outside of work. Residents and faculty frequently gather for social outings at local establishments and each other’s homes. There are local parks, rivers and lakes to explore. Cabarrus is centrally located between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Carolina coast, making for some great day and weekend getaways.

Our residency seeks applicants who are team- and service-oriented and committed to diversity so that we can best serve all members of our community.
