The didactic component of this residency program includes:
- weekly patient care conferences that review treatment planning of dental cases in medically complex population (e.g.: oncology, cardiac surgery, transplant clearance patients)
- monthly Oral Medicine patient care conferences reviewing select oral medicine cases (e.g.: oral lesions, oral mucosal disorders, salivary gland disorders, orofacial pain)
- weekly Oral Medicine literature review seminars
- preparation for American Board of Oral Medicine board examination (winter-spring)
- a practical course on evidence-based dentistry, and skills interpreting the literature and research design (monthly)

Additional didactic material includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- laboratory medicine
- pharmacology
- management of acute/chronic pain
- oral pathology
- oral radiology (principles, techniques and interpretation)
- oral manifestations of systemic disease
- oral complications of cancer therapy (e.g.:  oral mucositis, medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw)
- oral mucosal disorders
- autoimmune disorders to include Sjogren’s Syndrome
- management of medically compromised patients
- pharmacology
- salivary gland dysfunction and pathology
- nutrition
- sleep medicine
- clinical photography
