The Atrium Health Levine Cancer provides top quality and comprehensive cancer care to patients across more than 16 care locations in both North and South Carolina. Levine Cancer provides groundbreaking care to patients with a wide variety of types of cancer and our oncology care teams treat over 14,000 new patients each year. The various locations provide a variety of cancer care services in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
Most of the disease specific clinics have dedicated specialized pharmacists:
Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center (CMC), an 874-bed academic teaching hospital, level 1 Trauma center, and the flagship hospital for Atrium Health is directly connected to Levine Cancer Morehead location. At CMC there are over 130 inpatient beds dedicated to oncology services, including 32 BMT beds. The main campus consists of two six-story connected buildings providing dedicated cancer care with 145 infusion chairs and numerous site-specific clinics. Over 200 leading cancer doctors practice at Levine Cancer, including numerous specialists in very rare cancer types and blood disorders, nursing navigation, supportive care services, and survivorship programs. In addition, an on-site Phase 1 clinical trials unit provides patients access to over 50 of the newest and most innovative treatment options.
The Carolinas Medical Center PGY2 Oncology Residency program is a 52-week intensive learning program. Residents will spend the majority of the year in one-month rotations focused on both inpatient and outpatient oncology and hematology. Rotations are primarily located within the Carolinas Medical Center and Levine Cancer – Morehead buildings but specific experiences may also involve traveling to other Levine Cancer locations. Elective opportunities exist to customize to a resident’s individual interests and adjustments can be made to allow more time for experiences in preferred areas.
Additional experiences will include the formation and completion of a residency research project and a medication use evaluation. The resident will also complete a drug monograph or formulary review, drug information questions, in-services to other healthcare practitioners, and have the opportunity to co-precept pharmacy students and residents.
In addition to the full benefits of an Atrium Health employee, residents will have medical and dental coverage premiums paid by the employer. Ten paid days off, five sick days, five days for professional interviews, five bereavement days if needed and five holidays (based on the Atrium Health Holiday Schedule for the year) are available. A travel allowance will be provided to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, North Carolina Oncology Pharmacist (NCOP) meeting, and the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) annual conference. The resident is provided with office space containing an individual double monitor desktop computer, phone, pager, storage/filing space as well as a shared printer. In addition, the resident receives remote access to the hospital network, comprehensive drug information resources, three lab coats, a laptop, a daily meal allowance, and free parking. The Department of Pharmacy also has an active continuing education program with opportunities offered on a routine basis.
