When I rotated at CMC as a visiting student, and it didn't take long to realize it was the kind of program I was looking for. Why CMC: On my away rotation at CMC as a fourth-year medical student, I quickly experienced the unique camaraderie among the residents and the strong relationships they share with the attendings. The culture is one where everyone—from senior residents to faculty—is genuinely invested in teaching, creating an exceptional learning environment. Combined with the program's outstanding operative breadth and the opportunity to get into the OR early as a junior resident, I knew CMC was the ideal place for me to train and grow as a surgeon.

Why CMC: I was fortunate enough to spend time here as a fourth-year medical student. I was immediately drawn to the incredible faculty and co-resident relationships while maintaining an incomparable operative and educational environment. CMC checked all of my boxes: early operative autonomy, broad surgical training with the flexibility to pursue any fellowship, and a camaderie amongst my peers and team members. I knew this was a place where I would not only train to be a confident and capable surgeon, but have fun while doing so!

I was treated as a valued member of the team, not just a visiting student. The residents were genuinely invested in each other and in me. The attendings created an OR culture that balanced accountability with empowerment in a way that is truly rare. By the end of my four weeks, CMC had become the standard against which I measured every other program. The camaraderie, the shared ownership of patient care, and the pride everyone takes in this program left a lasting impression.

It was clear to me that this program would not only challenge me but also fully support my growth.

Why CMC: During my sub-internship, I saw the great surgical training at CMC with high-volume, high-complexity patients of all ages. Why CMC: My very first shadowing experience was here at CMC when I was 17 years old, and I remember just being in awe of the team dynamic of all the providers and all the cool things I was able to observe. Eight years later, I returned to CMC to complete a visiting rotation as a medical student. It felt like a full-circle moment, and I had immense support from the residents and my uncle, who has been a provider at CMC for over 10 years.

CMC is a high volume, level 1 trauma center for adult and pediatric patients. I was impressed with the autonomy and comfort that residents had while handling complex surgical patients during my sub-internship. The faculty are excellent in their support for residents with regards to both career goals and personal well-being. My co-interns are a fantastic group of people, and we have quickly become a tight knit group. Their support inside and outside of the hospital has made the transition to intern year a great one.
