The Atrium Health Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is an accredited 1-year clinical training program for physicians who are board certified or board eligible in either family medicine or internal medicine. The ideal candidate is a physician with a strong desire to build their clinical skills and knowledge related to geriatric medicine across the continuum of care and with an affinity toward developing therapeutic relationships with older adults and their families. The goal of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is to prepare physicians to evaluate and manage older adult patients in a variety of care settings.
Sharon Towers
Sharon Towers is a continuing care retirement community offering independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care for older adults. It was founded in the late 1960s by Presbyterian leaders in Charlotte. The not-for-profit community is home to over 300 residents on a 28-acre campus in the SouthPark area of Charlotte. The geriatric medicine fellow provides primary geriatric care in an outpatient clinic on the Sharon Towers campus in addition to providing medical services to patients in the assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. Atrium Health Mercy, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center, is a 185-bed adult tertiary acute care hospital located in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte. It is approximately 1 mile away from the main campus. Clinical block rotations and continuity clinic experiences provide fellows with training opportunities in acute care, long-term care, ambulatory care, hospice and palliative medicine, neurology, psychiatry, geriatric oncology and geriatric rehabilitation. Emphasis is placed on training fellows to perform comprehensive functional and cognitive evaluations, manage multiple chronic diseases, apply appropriate pharmacotherapy and monitor for adverse effects, identify and prevent geriatric syndromes, develop patient-centered treatment plans, and lead teams of healthcare professionals. Fellows will also understand the implications of health policy and clinical research on the delivery of medical care for older adults.

Learn moreThis program accepts fellows that have completed an accredited residency program in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine and are board certified or board eligible. Applications are accepted from the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the Fellowship Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
