Resident as Teacher

As a resident, you'll have numerous opportunities to teach and mentor others. Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is now a branch campus of Wake Forest School of Medicine, continuing its tradition as a top teaching site for third- and fourth-year medical students. Previously a favored training area for UNC students, CMC has transitioned to serving Wake Forest students while maintaining its strong educational foundation.

During your inpatient rotations as an intern, whether in family medicine or off-service, you will work closely with fourth-year medical students completing their Acting Internships.

Teaching is a key component of our residency program. As part of our core conference curriculum, PGY2 residents lead interactive case presentations on a topic of their choice, while PGY3 residents present grand rounds. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to engage with the community by giving a presentation at the local YMCA or another civic organization on a relevant medical topic, designed for a lay audience. If you're particularly passionate about teaching, we offer further opportunities in PGY3, including delivering didactic lectures to third-year medical students on family medicine topics, and, if desired, having fourth-year students work alongside you in your continuity clinic.

As an upper-level resident on the Family Medicine inpatient service, you’ll take on a supervisory role, teaching both medical students and family medicine interns. At the beginning of your second year, you'll participate in our "Resident as Teacher" workshop, which provides tools for effective teaching, including the "One-Minute Preceptor" and "RIME (Reporter/Interpreter/Manager/Expert)" models.

We place a strong emphasis on formative feedback for all learners. You'll attend interactive workshops focused on giving and receiving feedback early in both PGY1 and PGY2. These skills will be further developed in our Senior Resident Leadership Course during the spring of your second year (see "Leadership" page).
