Co-Chief Residents - Academic and Administrative

 Cappello

Christopher Cappello, MD

Welcome to Carolinas Rehabilitation! Our residency program offers a diverse array of experiences that will have residents well-prepared for any career path that they choose to pursue. Our attending physicians are very supportive and invested in the personal and professional development of our residents. It is an especially exciting time to be a resident at Carolinas Rehabilitation with the recent opening of our beautiful, new rehab hospital and the burgeoning collaborations with our partners at Wake Forest. I am excited to see our relationship with Wake Forest grow even more when they open the Charlotte campus of their medical school in the near future. Outside of work, Charlotte is a great place to live. With its great weather, outdoor activities are accessible nearly year-round. Charlotte also has plenty of awesome concerts, sporting events and festivals throughout the year. There's nowhere I'd rather complete my PM&R residency!

Jessica Kurtz, MD

Welcome to Carolinas Rehabilitation! Here you will find an immensely diverse patient population with diagnoses spanning the entire realm of PM&R. With a level 1 trauma center right next door in the heart of Charlotte there is never a dull moment. Our program offers comprehensive training through both inpatient and outpatient experiences which allows residents to explore any area of interest in the field of PM&R. The flexibility in the scheduled is particularly nice allowing for early exposure to help guide career or fellowship choices. Carolinas Rehabilitation gave me every opportunity to be hands on with peripheral joint injections, botulinum injections, NCS/EMG, and ultrasound from my first day as a resident. There is definitely nowhere else I would want to train!

Chief Resident - Quality Improvement

Powell1 Thomas Powell, DO

Welcome to Carolinas Rehabilitation! As part of the Atrium Health network in Charlotte, we are well integrated into the care of the city and surrounding areas. The program also uniquely allows residents to tailor their experience for their respective interests upon graduation. Opportunities are extensive outside of normal clinical duties facilitated by a dedicated research department, robust patient safety/quality improvement connections, and community events such as MedFest (provision of physical examinations for local adolescents with disabilities for the Special Olympics). Unmatched comradery amongst residents and faculty and the focus on work-life balance creates a healthy work environment. This is ideal in a city such as Charlotte which has more to offer than time in the day. The city's central location allows for day or weekend trips to the mountains near Asheville or the beaches of Wilmington! This program adequately prepares and allows a budding resident to find their place in the ever-changing world of medicine.

PM&R Alumni Faculty Comments

Terrence Pugh, MD: “I have undergone a significant amount of personal and professional growth during my 3 years here as a resident at Carolinas Rehab, so I was very pleased when an opportunity presented itself to remain as faculty. I know that being a part of a great team of physicians, therapists, nurses and staff along with continued mentorship will only further advance my development as a physician. I look forward to continuing my career as an attending at Carolinas Rehabilitation.”

Matthew Shall, MD: "After completing my residency training in Charlotte, I was excited to return as a faculty member to work with a number of the fantastic physicians who mentored me through my training. Carolinas Rehabilitation is in the forefront of rehabilitation not only locally and regionally, but has a growing reputation throughout the United States. I am proud to say that I am part of such an exemplary institution."
