Internal Medicine
Since 1968, the Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) Internal Medicine Residency program at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center has provided residents with exceptional, comprehensive clinical training. With our mix of autonomy, diverse patient pathophysiology, one-on-one faculty/resident teaching and collegial atmosphere, we provide an ideal environment for residents to thrive. We have an excellent ABIM Board Pass rate and an outstanding track record for the fellowship match.
In the program, residents will:

Atrium Health Myers Park, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center
Located less than two blocks from the hospital, Atrium Health Myers Park Internal Medicine serves as the main ambulatory training site for our residents. Our categorical residents each have a continuity clinic practice at Myers Park, and our preliminary residents participate in general internal medicine clinic by seeing patients for hospital follow-up and urgent care visits. Our residents also spend time in several sub-specialty clinics at Myers Park.

Carolinas Medical Center
Inpatient training is done exclusively at Carolinas Medical Center's 874-bed main facility. Our hospital features state-of-the-art Medical Intensive Care and Cardiac Critical Care Units and is a Level I trauma center, with more than 120,000 ED visits last year.

Wake Forest School of Medicine - Charlotte
Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center has developed a strategic partnership with Wake Forest School of Medicine to bring a 4-year medical school campus to Charlotte. Currently, CMC serves as the largest clinical branch campus for Wake Forest medical students with plans to enroll the first class of MS-1 students in the new 4-year medical school by 2024.

Program Curriculum
Our residency program is committed to resident education, wellness, scholarship, and excellence in clinical training within a supportive, caring community. Our program serves Charlotte and Mecklenburg County as well as the surrounding referring counties. Our referral base consists of approximately 1.5 to 2 million people and includes western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina. Residents will have access to an exceptionally diverse and complex clinical case mix. Whether your future includes a subspecialty fellowship, general internal medicine practice, academic medicine, or a career as a hospitalist, our program provides you with the individual attention and support you will need to succeed.

Our residents receive longitudinal training in Quality Improvement (QI) throughout their residency. As a part of our QI curriculum, residents learn to evaluate their own practice and examine patient care in a systems-based manner. Our residents are provided “report cards” on their care of patients in their practice panel with diabetes, asthma, heart failure, and coronary artery disease. These reports are reviewed semi-annually with ambulatory faculty mentors. Following this review, residents develop an action plan for patients at highest risk for poor health outcomes in their practice panel.

For the 2023-2024 recruitment season, all our residency interview days will be conducted VIRTUALLY. We will begin reviewing applications through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS) on September 27, 2023. We accept applications only from participants in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) which is available through your Dean's Office. Our 2023-2024 interview season will run from mid-October through mid-December. There will be limited opportunities for optional in-person and/or virtual “second looks” in late-January and early-February after our program rank list is submitted.
For the 2023-2024 ERAS® cycle, our program strongly encourages all applicants to complete the optional supplemental ERAS application, in addition to the standard MyERAS application.
The additional information collected on the optional supplemental application will help our program staff learn more about an applicant’s medical education journey, including more meaningful information about an applicant’s work, volunteer, and research experiences, and will help us better identify individuals who fit our program’s environment and mission.
