Our residents’ career options following residency training are unlimited. Throughout training, our residents have opportunities for teaching, leadership and scholarship, including participation in clinical research, presentations at national medical meetings and publication.
Each year, typically 30-50% of our PGY-3 residents pursues fellowship training, and our fellowship placement rate is outstanding! There are numerous opportunities for scholarly activity in each field of interest, and we provide close mentoring throughout the fellowship application process. Currently, CMC offers ACGME-approved fellowship training programs in Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Care, Transplant Hepatology, Geriatrics and Sports Medicine.
For those residents who do not pursue fellowship training, some will enter ambulatory practice, some will become hospitalists and some will enter academic medicine. Our program’s comprehensive and flexible curriculum allows our residents to succeed regardless of their career path.
Many of our residents will choose to stay in the Charlotte region following residency training. The city of Charlotte and the surrounding area offers a diverse community with metropolitan amenities amongst a friendly environment. Charlotte truly is a great place to live and practice medicine!

We offer an ACGME-approved fellowship training program in Gastroenterology. This three-year training program offers two GI fellowship positions per year through the NRMP [National Resident Matching Program].
We also offer an ACGME-approved fellowship training program in Hematology-Oncology through Levine Cancer Institute. This fellowship training program offers four fellowship positions per year through the NRMP [National Resident Matching Program].
Carolinas Medical Center also offers an ACGME-approved fellowship program in Geriatric Medicine. The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is a one-year clinical training program for physicians who are board certified or board eligible in either Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. The Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship is starting in July 2026 and the Cardiology fellowship is anticipated for July 2027.
The Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship is a 3-year program designed to provide fellows opportunities in managing complex respiratory diseases and critically ill patients across diverse settings. The program emphasizes a strong foundation in pulmonary physiology, critical care procedures, and evidence-based medicine. With exposure to advanced diagnostic techniques and therapeutic interventions, fellows develop proficiency in areas like mechanical ventilation, bronchoscopy, and point-of-care ultrasound. The curriculum balances clinical rotations with didactic sessions, research opportunities, and quality improvement projects.
The Fellowship in Adult Cardiovascular Care is an extensive 12-month program that prepares advanced practice providers (APPs) to gain additional knowledge, skills and competency within the specialty of cardiovascular medicine. In conjunction with Atrium Health’s Center for Advanced Practice, Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) and Sanger, the fellowship will provide advanced training in cardiovascular disease management with experiences in adult consultative cardiology, ambulatory/longitudinal cardiovascular care, electrophysiology, heart failure/transplant, invasive and noninvasive cardiology, critical care cardiology and research and scholarly activity. This intensive fellowship program prepares APPs to provide excellent care for patients with acute and chronic cardiac diseases.
The Supportive Oncology Academic Fellowship at the Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute (LCI) Department of Supportive Oncology (DSO) is designed to train next generation physician leaders to have expertise in the emerging field of Supportive Oncology. The comprehensive post-graduate academic year offers the advantage of a guided learning experience and direct patient care. The fellow has exposure to the care of oncology patients primarily in the outpatient setting with clinical rotations in subspecialized clinics. The curriculum allows the fellow to cultivate broad knowledge of the multidisciplinary approach to supportive care in cancer.
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Atrium Health is a collaboration between the one-of-a-kind Department of Supportive Oncology (DSO) at Levine Cancer Institute (LCI) and Carolinas Palliative Care and Hospice Group (CPCHG). Fellows will train to become next generation physician leaders delivering compassionate and clinically excellent care in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The comprehensive post-graduate year offers the advantage of a guided learning experience and direct patient care.
Hepatology Fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center is designed to provide advanced training in liver disease and liver transplantation for candidates intending to pursue a career in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. Candidates are required to have completed an ACGME-accredited gastroenterology fellowship program. The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship is intended to provide a comprehensive academic educational program with advanced clinical training, research and local, regional and national conferences. The duration of the fellowship is one year. During the fellowship, the fellow will be provided with the opportunity to fulfill UNOS qualifications for a liver transplant physician. They will be given the opportunity to observe the liver transplant operation and to attend organ procurements.
Atrium Health’s Obesity Medicine Fellowship is a 1-year program designed to train competent and well-rounded internal medicine or family medicine physicians in the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of obesity. Fellows will work with board certified obesity medicine specialists, bariatric surgeons, advanced practitioners and dieticians to learn about the complex disease of obesity. Upon completion, graduates will be prepared to sit from the ABOM examination and practice in a variety of settings.
