The disaster operations division, part of the Department of Emergency Medicine, provides medical direction for both Carolinas MED-1 and the Charlotte SMAT in Charlotte, NC.

Carolinas MED-1 is designed to provide a comprehensive level of patient care services at the site of a natural or man-made disaster, or mass casualty incident/event. The delivery of life-saving treatment measures and comprehensive medical-surgical care in the field setting can now be provided in a clean, clinical environment.

A State Medical Assistance Team II (SMAT II) is a multidiscipline volunteer team of medical and non-medical professionals, established to provide mobile medical support for short and long term disasters or catastrophic events.
